MEMBERS

The membership of the St. Columban’s College Interact Club in 2001 is over 50 members. Students are able to use their membership as one avenue of school service. Students have to commit themselves to 2 areas such as debating, interschool sport, choir, school bands, gym club, Tournament of the Minds etc. each year.

Most members are in years 8 to 10. All board members have to be in years 10 to 12. Parental permission is required to join and a joining fee of $4 covers the Interact badge. Students must attend 60% of meetings to claim Interact as one of their commitments.

Would you like to join Interact?

If you like to help other people, and want to have something to do each Friday lunch time, come to L1.1 at the meeting bell on Fridays or get a joining form from Mrs Gregory after morning PC in L1.3.

 What happens at Interact meetings?

The meetings are usually chaired by the Interact President. A roll is taken each meeting. Reports from current projects are read, Projects are planned and volunteers are called for  workshops after school on Tuesdays (eg for painting blackboards to send to PNG, cooking for the Mother’s or Father’s Day stall, making teddy bears to send to the Philippines). A Rotarian from the Caboolture Rotary Club usually attends and reports activities of our sponsor club.

The club has dinner meetings approximately twice a year where the Rotary Club of Caboolture is invited. These are held in L1.2 on a Monday  night when the Rotary Club usually meets.

Every year the students make small teddy bears to send to the Philippines in February with the Helping Children Smile surgical team . The team performs up to 50 operations for hare lips and cleft palates
in  2 weeks each year. The teddy bears are given to each child after
their operations as comforters

In 2001 the students have made 24 blackboards sized 30cm x 30cm.
Staff member Mr Beagan cut the boards and Interactors painted them with 2 coats of blackboard paint, and lacquered the back. They are to
be bundled up with chalk and sent to the Donations in Kind centre to
be shipped in a container to Papua New Guinea for individual student use  in the remote areas where books are not available.

E    SOCCER BALLS AND STATIONERY FOR EAST TIMOR

In 2001 4 soccer balls were purchased and signed by Interactors, and sent with a box of stationery items ( pens, pencils, textas, rulers,
erasers, exercise books, scissors, glue etc.) to the island of Hera
in East Timor. In 2000 another box of stationery items were sent to Dili and distributed to children in an orphanage there. In 1999 a stationery box was sent to the Solomon Islands.

           E      EAST AFRICA SCHOOL APPEAL

Every meeting a jar is passed around and members contribute 10c or 20c towards the East Africa school appeal. This fund was started by
Ms Gemma Rice, a teacher from Armidale in NSW to provide education in East Africa. Funds are used for school fees, solar lighting, textbooks and vehicle and machinery maintenance. The school is in Tanzania. When the money in the jar reaches $5 it is banked into the East Africa School Appeal account.

E   OLD TEXT BOOKS FROM LIBRARY   FOR PNG

Three car boot-loads of old text books from our library were given to Donations in Kind to be packed and sent by container to Papua New Guinea or the Solomon Islands for school use.
